Job Description

An opportunity has arisen for a Credit Underwriter to work with a specialist bank dedicated to helping SME's within the UK grow by providing exceptional services within commercial property loan lending and commercial savings. The role will be assisting the Head of Credit with support on credit applications in order that they comply with lending policy and are compliant with the bank's policies and procedures.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assess the credit and risk profiles of customers within the asset finance lending market, determining the acceptability of proposals and providing recommendations or alternative solutions where appropriate
  • Conduct an independent assessment of each case and prepare the relevant documents for an informed decision to be made by the Credit Underwriter
  • Recommend delinquent accounts that due to an identified adverse track record qualify for inclusion on the Bank's Watch List
  • Ensure compliance with Bank's policies, procedures and asset finance lending guidelines together with all appropriate regulatory and statutory requirements, implementing actions to protect the Bank's business at all times
  • Proactively review with the Credit Underwriter credit processes and recommend changes that will deliver operational efficiencies and foster a culture of continuous credit risk improvement
  • Demonstrably support a culture that contributes to the achievement of the financial objectives of the business while maintaining portfolio asset quality
  • Develop credit risk and industry/market expertise through both internal and external contacts with market participants, including due diligence and customer visits on an ad hoc basis (usually with a BDM or the Commercial Director, Asset Finance)
  • Assist and cover for the Collections Team

Skills and experience required:

  • A sound proven working knowledge of lending principles, credit analysis and underwriting methodologies for small-ticket transactions and an understanding of the relevant rules under the Financial Services Acts
  • Knowledge of the asset finance commercial environment and sector specialism including asset finance lending and the SME market
  • An understanding of financial management and the wider management principles and techniques
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Knowledge of software packages that support lending admin (e.g. Vienna) is desirable but not essential

Salary and benefits:

  • £28,000 - £35,000 dependent upon experience
  • Non-contractual bonus
