At the start of 2020, the recruitment industry in the UK was valued at £38.9 billion. Unemployment was at its lowest levels since the 1970’s, and the average annual industry growth rate was a comfortable 6%. On the whole, despite Brexit looming, the recruitment industry had a strong outlook for the year ahead. Then COVID-19 hit. While in January international news reports told of a virus outbreak in China, nobody could have predicted the massive negative impact the virus would have on the UK, nor how long lasting that impact would be.
With the pandemic not yet under control, and still many uncertainties surrounding Brexit, the UK economy is in for a rocky start to 2021. It’s going to take a different approach to both business and recruitment. Research reflects that the marketplace is changing and that the companies too slow or too resistant to change are the ones most likely to face extinction.
